KUALA LUMPUR: a study by women’s team Sisters In Islam (SIS) indicates that conservative thinking will always be commonplace among Muslim women into the country though there is some progress when it comes to demanding better equality.
The study, en titled “Perceptions and Realities: the general public and Personal Rights of Muslims in Malaysia”, unveiled that 97% of females consented as a “good wife” that they must obey their husbands and that a woman’s obedience defines her.
“This uncompromising responsibility to obey one’s husband has resulted in numerous circumstances where spouses never have taken into account damage or injustices that could be dedicated to them,” SIS said.
About 21% of this 675 participants thought that a spouse can hit their partner, citing the style of “nusyuz”, or refusing to obey a husband’s wishes or commands.
SIS, nevertheless, said that striking the spouse goes straight resistant to the concepts associated with Quran, noting that Prophet Muhammad “never hit their wife under any circumstances”.
Meanwhile, about 70% of this participants accept that a spouse has the directly to practise polygamy, but only when they can treat most of the wives fairly.
